Blood Moon Meaning – Powerful phenomena dates for 10 years

In brief, Blood Moon meaning is something very easy to understand. Spiritually speaking, it’s a bit complex though. This is a phenomenon in which we have a Total Lunar Eclipse, that is: the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon are aligned causing the Moon to enter the shadow of the Earth, called the Umbra.

But why is it called a Blood Moon? Is there any bleeding? What exactly is the Blood Moon meaning?

I’ll write about this in this post and also explain the spiritual part, according to Modern Witchcraft studies.

Unlike the Blue Moon, where the Moon does not change its color, during the Blood Moon the Moon changes its color, getting a reddish hue and therefore being popularly called the Blood Moon. This happens exactly because the shadow of the Earth, the Umbra, is projected onto the Moon.

Blood Moon Meaning: A diagram to explain

The Blood Moon is somewhat rare, just like the Blue Moon. For millennia we have observed the Lunar and Solar movements and our ancestors were already able to predict when Lunar Eclipses and Solar Eclipses would occur.

In this diagram below, you can clearly see all the parts that form a Lunar Eclipse, and then you’ll be totally able to understand the Blood Moon meaning.

Let me explain all the parts of it:

1. You can see the sun in the left part;
2. You can see the Earth in the right part;
3. The dashed line shows the movement of the Moon around the Earth;
4. The sunlight hits the Earth and projects its shadow in an angular way;
5. The lateral parts of the Earth’s shadow are called Penumbra;
   • When the Sun, Earth, and Moon align and the Moon stays in the Penumbra we have a Partial Lunar Eclipse (the Moon is not totally covered by the Earth’s shadow);
6. The central part of the Earth’s shadow is called Umbra;
   • This is the part we are interested now! When the Sun, Earth, and Moon align and the Moon enters the Umbra region we have a Total Lunar Eclipse, the so-called Blood Moon!

Blood Moon spiritual meaning

The Blood Moon spiritual meaning is a bit complex to explain. However, I’ll try to make it simple – mainly for those who are not really familiar with these energies.

Firstly, in Modern Witchcraft traditions, the Sun is considered to be the God. And his journey is depicted in the Wheel of the Year and the 8 Sabbats. Each Sabbat marks a specific moment of his journey.

Second, the Moon and also the Earth, are considered to be the Goddess. When we’re considering her the Earth, she takes full part in the God’s journey throughout the WHeel of the Year. When she’s being represented by the Moon, we celebrate her energy in every Full Moon through an Esbat. In this “Lunar” aspect (yes, you got the name of my website!), she’s depicted as the Triple Goddess and her faces change according to the Moon phases.

Now that you know – or remembered – this concept, we can go further and understand the Blood Moon meaning through this aspect.

Whenever we have an Eclips – Solar or Lunar – we are actually seeing the God and the Goddess aligned, united as one again.

So basically, there are two scenarios:

• During a Solar Eclipse we celebrate their union, but we “focus” on the God’s energy;
• During a Lunar Eclipse we celebrate their union, but we “focus” on the Goddess’s energy.

As we’re having a Blood Moon, that is, a Total Lunar Eclipse, we’re going to work with their energy and focus on the Goddess’s one! Remember that it’s also a Full Moon night, so it’s an Esbat too!
