What’s the origin of Gayatri Mantra?

According to the Vedas, a collection of texts that explain the creation and origin of the world in the Hindu conception, the God (Deva) Brahma created the material world as we know it today. Among his first creations were the Sarasvati River, which was personified as the Goddess Sarasvati and became his wife, and the Gayatri Mantra which was personified as the Goddess Gayatri.

This mantra is dedicated to the Hindu deity Savita, a solar deva. For this reason, this mantra is also known as Sāvitrī.

The first written appearance of this mantra is in the Rigveda, one of the four volumes that are part of the Vedas. The Rigveda is the oldest of the four and the other three are called Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda.

However, even though we have the first recorded version written in an ancient book, scholars agree that the mantra was already orally passed long before it was written.
